In early 2024, unusually heavy long rains swept across Kenya, triggering widespread flooding in several regions. In Nairobi, Kibera—one of Africa’s largest informal settlements—was among the hardest hit.By late March, floodwaters had inundated makeshift homes built from mud, corrugated iron sheets, and plastic tarpaulins. Stagnant water pooled in narrow alleyways, leaving some families stranded indoors. With drainage systems either clogged or absent, the water had little means of escape.
