Joyleen Chepng’tich: Celebrating Melanin in Fashion

Joyleen Chepng’tich-Afri Star

“I’m Joyleen, a free spirit, laid-back person. One of the ways I express or explain my personality is through my style. Hence, my brand is just an expression of me.

Melanin is a collection of ten runway looks that shows and tells about the black skin shades—a mix of casual and plain couture. The collection is inspired by black people and our melanin in its various shades. It’s an appreciation of how beautiful our melanin is and how important it is.

Youth, as our audience, take pride in who they are.”

“My workspace is my sanctuary—a quiet place where I bring my designs to life. Working from home allows me to create freely, experimenting with embroidery, zigzag stitching, and new fabric manipulations. This machine is everything to me—my main tool, my main baby.

Being part of this big platform excites me. For this collection, I was inspired by Black identity and the fluidity of masculinity and femininity, especially in streetwear. I wanted to challenge norms, mix elements, and push myself creatively. Creating a three-piece set has been one of my favorite challenges so far, and I can’t wait to showcase it!”
