AboutAnwar Sadat Swaka is a documentary photographer and visual storyteller based in Nairobi, Kenya, working under www.sadat-photo-stories.com He specializes in reframing narratives about urban spaces and communities, focusing on showcasing the beauty, vibrancy, and resilient spirit of people and their environments. His creative journey is deeply rooted in a desire to shift narratives and uncover deeper truths through visual storytelling. Growing up and living in the vibrant community of Kibera, Nairobi—a place often overshadowed by stereotypes—has profoundly influenced his perspective and passion for storytelling. Anwar’s work aims to reveal the richness, resilience, and dynamism of everyday life, he searches for intimate and unique perspectives, capturing stories with humanity and respect. His work offers alternative narratives that highlight hope, dignity, and transformation. For Anwar, photography is more than a craft; it is a journey of self-discovery, fueled by learning from and about others’ untold stories. Through his work, he challenges preconceived notions and inspires new ways of seeing the world. Although largely self-taught, Anwar honed his skills through training at The VII Academy under the Foundry Foundation and Reuters Digital Journalism programs. These opportunities equipped him with expertise in visual storytelling, photojournalism, and immersive reporting, fostering his ability to document life with a profound sensitivity to people’s realities. Anwar’s work has garnered notable recognition, including awards from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for winning the Zero Maternal Mortality Health Photo Award, the Global Health 50/50 Representation Matters Award, and the United Nations Aligned Photo Award. His photography has been exhibited and showcased by The Guardian Magazine in 2019 and by Global Health 50/50 at University College London (UCL) in 2020 and 2021. . His work has also been featured by The Lancet, HelpAge International and other several other prominent publications.. He is looking into writing a book in which he will make the personal, universal.
