GenZ Led Protest

The June, July and August 2024 protests in Kenya, led primarily by Gen Zs, gained significant traction as they pushed back against economic hardships and government policies, particularly the controversial Finance Bill 2024. These youth-driven demonstrations reflected a broader frustration with high unemployment, inflation and government inefficiencies, with many protesters demanding greater accountability and even the resignation of key leaders, including President William Ruto. The protests evolved from digital activism into physical demonstrations. Genzs utilized platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok, spreading hashtags such as #RejectFinanceBill2024 to rally support. This movement leveraged online tools to crowdsource funds for injured protesters and memorials for victims of police violence, including Rex Masai and Evans Kiratu, who tragically lost their lives during the protests due to police brutality. The police crackdown, marked by the use of tear gas and force, intensified public anger and drew wider support for the movement.A unique aspect of the protests was the heavy reliance on technology. Young people organized through X Spaces and other social media channels, using these platforms not only to mobilize but also to track police actions and hold businesses accountable for their responses to the protests. Despite these efforts, challenges such as internet shutdowns and shadow banning of protest-related hashtags temporarily hindered their efforts, showcasing the tension between state control and digital freedom. This youth-led movement signaled a shift in Kenya’s political landscape, moving away from traditional tribal politics toward issue-based activism. With smartphones in hand, bottles of water and a Kenyan flag , Kenya’s Gen Z proved to be a formidable force in the push for transparency and justice, making it clear that they are determined to shape the country’s future through both online and street-level resistance.
