The Next Billion Users (NBU) project by Google was focused on expanding digital access and fostering innovation in emerging markets. It reflected Google’s commitment to understanding the unique needs, challenges, and aspirations of people in regions where the next wave of internet users will emerge—primarily in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In Africa 2021, I documented communities that are often underserved or overlooked who are not just passive recipients of technology but active creators of digital futures. The project aims to bridge the digital divide by ensuring more people have access to the internet, affordable devices, and services, allowing them to participate meaningfully in the global digital economy. It addresses challenges such as limited connectivity, literacy barriers, and affordability issues.
Central to NBU’s mission is the development of localized solutions that reflect the realities of these markets. This includes creating voice-based tools, offline apps, multilingual interfaces, and platforms optimized for limited data or low-end devices. The project also highlights the transformative power of technology, showing how individuals and communities use it to solve problems, connect with others, and improve their livelihoods. From education to entrepreneurship, NBU captures stories of resilience, adaptation, and innovation, demonstrating that technology is not only a tool but a catalyst for empowerment.
Through user-centered design, Google collaborates with local communities to create inclusive technologies that are accessible to all. Products like Google Go and YouTube Go are examples of lightweight apps designed for areas with limited data and poor connectivity. Beyond access, the NBU project explores the opportunities these new users will bring to the global economy, emphasizing that they will shape the future of the internet in ways that reflect their cultures, needs, and aspirations. The Next Billion Users initiative embodies the intersection of technology and human experience, proving that digital inclusion can unlock potential, foster innovation, and promote social and economic growth in emerging markets.
